Figg’s Ordinary's philosophy is to provide delicious gluten and refined sugar free foods made with locally sourced ingredients. Our menu changes on a weekly and seasonal basis to optimize locally harvested foods.
In addition to our health goals, our sustainability goals include being a zero waste business and composting all food scraps. We hope our customers share our commitment to sustainability, and encourage our customers to bring their own containers!
GLUTEN FREE HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Why Gluten Free? Figg’s is a dedicated Gluten Free facility, making our products safe for those with serious food allergies or Celiac Disease. We use alternatives to wheat flour such as almond, buckwheat, coconut, millet, oat, sorghum.
Additionally, we offer a variety of dairy free, egg free, nut free, and vegan products for our customers with other dietary restrictions whether medical or by choice.
While sugar is still sugar, we use no refined sugar and instead use less refined alternative sweeteners such as coconut sugar, Maryland produced maple syrup, and local honey.
FIGG'S AND COMMUNITY
Figg's Ordinary is an integral part of the Chestertown Community. In addition to serving as a welcoming and enjoyable place to enjoy great food and beverages, Figg's offers a space to enjoy the pleasure of each other's company. Figg's Ordinary wishes to remain true to its name -- to be a place where family, friends, students, and citizens can enjoy the relaxed charm of our shop, our delicious and nutritious food, and our commitment to sustainability.
Part of our commitment is to the Town of Chestertown. Figg's Ordinary is a member of the Downtown Chestertown Association (DCA) and works hard to ensure the sustainability of the community, both environmentally and commercially. Figg's started out as a Farmer's Market stand, and remains committed to supporting many Farmer's Market businesses by purchasing their locally grown produce, eggs, honey, and jam.
Figg's Ordinary intends to support the community by sponsoring workshops and lectures on topics of interest to the community. In addition to using locally grown organic produce whenever possible, Figg’s supports other producers by featuring their products in our recipes, on our menu, and in the shop and by including the makers in programs, demonstrations, and events.
WHO IS FIGG?
Figg was one of Ingrid’s beloved miniature dachshunds and Figg’s happy and spunky spirit inspired the name of the bakery. Although Figg passed on to the great kennel in the sky too soon, her memory lives on and always makes Ingrid smile, just as she hopes her products make you smile.

WHAT IS AN ORDINARY?
“Ordinaries” provided a communal table around which travelers, politicians, and townspeople could share a meal and pause for conversation in the days of Colonial America.
Chestertown, a colonial town founded in 1706, maintains its historic charm while also adapting to modern life. The name Ordinary is particularly fitting as a colonial term for tavern, a place offering food and drinks. We thought we would recall this colonial use of the word as we welcome visitors and residents!
We hope that Figg’s Ordinary's downtown Chestertown location, in the heart of the historic district, provides the space for the same type of gatherings had in colonial Ordinaries; a central location with food and drinks for friends to take a quiet moment out of their day for meaningful conversations.
